Types of guidance parents can provide students & the value of homework
Authorities at BDMI, one of the
top cbse schools in south Kolkata, believes that awareness regarding the types
of guidance a parent can provide to the student is extremely valuable & effective.
While all schools promote parent involvement, there are various different types
of involvement, which ranges from encouraging volunteering and fundraising to
providing parents with the all-important home-based learning activities. Joyce
Epstein of the Johns Hopkins University, Center on School, Family and Community
Partnerships, is one of the USA’s leading experts on parent involvement.
According to him school parent involvement programs can be divided into six
broad categories:
1. Parenting- Schools help families with their
parenting skills. They provide information on children’s developmental stages
and offer a list of advices on learning-friendly home environments for a child
to grow.
2. Communicating- This is basically working to educate
families about their child’s progress and school services. It provides
opportunities for parents to communicate with the school.
3. Volunteering- It ranges from offering opportunities
for parents to visit their child’s school to finding innovative ways to recruit
and train them to work in the classroom as well.
4. Learning at home- Educators in school share ideas
to promote at-home learning through high expectations and strategies. This way
parents can monitor and help students with homework.
5. Decision-making- Schools include families as
partners in school organizations, advisory panels, and other similar
committees.
Community collaboration- Basically a two-way outreach strategy in which
community or business groups are involved in the educational process
